- Pet Allergy and Skin Care in Mountain Green, Utah
Skin problems are among the most common reasons a dog or cat visits the vet, and among the easiest to treat for a week without solving. At Mtn Green Animal Hospital, Dr. Nicole Sorensen works these cases up to find what is actually going on: which allergy, which infection, which combination. She plans the testing strategically with your budget in mind, choosing the tests most likely to answer the question first, and she walks you through what the results mean before anything is prescribed.
What we see
Environmental allergy (atopy), food allergy, flea allergy, ear infections that keep coming back, hot spots, bacterial and yeast skin infections, and autoimmune skin disease. The signs owners notice: scratching and licking, chewed paws, head shaking and red ears, hair loss, scabs and odor, or a pet that cannot settle at night.
How we find the cause
Every case starts with a full exam and consultation ($70 during business hours), so you know the plan and the estimate before we go further. From there, most of the work-up is done here in the hospital: skin scrapes, cytology of the skin and ears, cultures, allergy blood testing, food elimination trials and biopsies. Specialty tests go to an outside laboratory. Dr. Sorensen orders in sequence rather than all at once, and reads the results with you: what they show, what they rule out, and what the next step is.
Treatment that fits the diagnosis
Relief first, then control. Depending on what we find: prescription anti-itch injections or tablets (Cytopoint, Apoquel), medicated baths and shampoos, ear treatments, parasite control, a prescription diet, or immunotherapy (allergy shots or drops) for long-term management. You leave with a plan for the coming weeks, not just a refill.
When a dermatologist is the right call
Some cases belong with a board-certified veterinary dermatologist. Dr. Sorensen consults with the dermatologist first when a case warrants it, which often answers the question without a referral, and refers when that is the right next step for your pet.
How to book with Dr. Sorensen
Book online and choose Dr. Nicole Sorensen as the provider, or call (801) 516-7004 and ask for her. Bring any previous records, the food your pet eats, and photos of the skin on a bad day; they shorten the work-up.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can my pet's allergies be cured?
Most allergies are managed, not cured. The goal is a pet that is comfortable most of the year on the least medication that works, with flares caught early. Food allergy is the exception: once the trigger is found, avoiding it can end the problem.
How long does a food trial take?
Eight to twelve weeks on a strict prescription or novel-protein diet, with nothing else by mouth, then a planned re-challenge. We set it up with you and check in along the way.
Is it fleas, food, or the environment?
Often more than one. Flea allergy is ruled out first because it is the simplest to control. A seasonal pattern points to environmental allergy; year-round itch with ear or digestive signs raises food allergy. The exam, the history and the first tests sort it out.
Do you treat ear infections?
Yes. Ear infections in dogs and cats are often a sign of an underlying allergy, so we treat the infection and look for the reason it keeps returning.
How do I make sure I see Dr. Sorensen?
Choose her as the provider when you book online, or call and ask for her. If her next opening is further out than you would like, say so; the front desk will tell you the options.
